2012-13 Coaching Certification Clinics and Information

Registration procedure for certification courses- DO NOT CONTACT HOCKEY NOVA SCOTIA (they will not register you without TASA Approval)

Coaches are asked to review the schedule and sign up for the necessary clinic they require by filling in the registration form in full and returning it to the Certification Coordinator, Ron Jewers, by email at tasacert@gmail.com Coaches are encouraged to sign up for their desired clinics as soon as possible (before the registration deadline) as clinics fill up “very” quickly.

HNS Clinic Registration Form
The Certification Coordinator will approve and forward the registration form to the course facilitator.  A registration confirmation will be sent to the individual coach once it’s approved with instructions to follow.  It is very important that coaches commit fully to the clinics they sign up for.  The association/teams will be required to incur clinic fees for any coach who fails to show up to a clinic.

How many Courses do I need to take if I require 2?
A coach will only be required to attend a maximum of one (1) certification clinic in any one (1) season. An example of this would be if a coach is new and requires both the NCCP and the HSP, they would take the NCCP Development Level I or Initiation Program clinic (as applicable in year one and the Hockey Safety Program Clinic in their second season. This would allow the coach to be eligible for both seasons.)

HCSP LEVEL 2
It is recommended that all teams at the “AAA”, “AA”, and “A” levels have at least one member of the bench staff certified at the HCSP Level II. HCSP Level II is available to individuals who hold a valid First Aid certificate and CPR Level “C” from a recognized agency. HCSP Level II is provided once an individual provides proof of certification. There is no clinic training required for this certification. With this certification, an individual will have to refresh every five (5) years instead of every three (3) years.  Individuals interested in obtaining this certification may do so by providing proof of the required qualifications to Hockey Nova Scotia. (SEE TASA SAFETY TAB FOR DATES INFO for STANDARD FIRST AID/CPR-C in METRO)

Special Circumstances-FAQ

In TASA-our trainers are registered also as an Assistant Coach in a dual position. If by chance you are considered as just the trainer (on rare occasion in TASA) than the
Hockey NS definition of a Trainer ONLY is as follows
“ A person who is on the bench during the games to attend to any injuries. This person is on the bench or in the rink during practices as well - but does not go on the ice at all to help with any practices ”
You will then require the HCSP Level 1 course/Risk management screening and Respect in Sport (or Speak out) only.

Grandfather Clause for Coach Courses
NOTE: For the NCCP1-, coaches who have previously certified in either the NCCP Coach or NCCP Intermediate levels are not required to take the new NCCP Development I  Level Clinic. They will be eligible to coach at any level and any position with what they currently have.

IF YOU ARE A DOCTOR/Nurse/Paramedic/ Firefighter etc
All medically trained professionals must take the HSP Level 1 Course if required above. The reason is it deals with rink safety, hockey equipment fitting and various other non first aid topics that are specific to hockey. But see HCSP Level 2 section above as you problay will qualify to upgrade your certification once you complete the course.

Age Groups-
NOTE: Coaches and instructors at the Initiation entry level and Novice levels will not be permitted to register for the NCCP Development Level I clinic. Coaches and instructors must register in the clinic established as appropriate to the age grouping of the players they are coaching/instructing.

DEADLINES:
There are no exceptions to the certification requirements and the staff courses required must be present in your Ehockey Hockey Canada account by Dec 31/2012 in most cases. It is the responsibility of the coach and his/her Minor Hockey Association to ensure all requirements are met.

Hockey NS- Definitions:

Coach or Assistant Coach
·         A person who is both on the bench during games and is on the ice during practices

Manager
·         A person who volunteers to help out a team with booking ice time, submitting tournament applications and making travel plans, coordinates team budgets and fundraising events. This person does not go on the bench during games and does not go on the ice during practice.
